Getting Ready
By Nina Martucci
You always show up late
putting on more lipstick
so much concealer
firing up the smoke and mirrors
(but especially the smoke)
to mask the mountains of self doubt
getting so perfectly ready
you forget the person who arrived
underneath
and amid the protective preparation
the careful crafting of a character
the moment drifts away
with the cough of a hazy cloud
