About this issue
The word minute contains a contradiction. It names something measurable, sixty seconds, a unit we track and divide and lose, and something almost imperceptible. A minute detail. A minute difference. Something so small it nearly escapes notice.
We chose this theme because we wanted to see what writers would do with that tension. The answer, as it turns out, is everything.
The pieces in this issue find the minute in a timestamp frozen at 1:59pm, in a pocket watch measured in winds, in a morning exercise that lasts forever in the body's memory. They find it in a card game, a flight from a marriage. In the pause before something breaks or holds. In the space between two people that is almost nothing and somehow everything.
What unites them is an attention to the weight of small moments, the recognition that the most significant things in a life often occupy almost no time at all. A teacher walks toward you. A phone keeps ringing. You step into a river. The minute is rarely the point. It's what the minute contains, and what it leaves behind.
This is Minute. How long it lasts is up to you.
— Henry Fisher, Editor-in-Chief
